Decluttering Services

Decluttering services

A declutterer spends hours in your home going through your things, so how they work matters as much as what they charge. These questions help you tell services apart before anyone visits.

BusinessIts name, and who you spoke to.
01Do you charge by the hour, by the session or by the job?If by the hour, ask how many hours a space like yours usually takes.
02Is there a first visit before any work begins? And whether that visit is charged.
03Do you work alongside me, or do the sorting yourselves? Some services make every decision with you; others work from a brief.
04Who decides what goes?Listen for an answer that leaves the final word with you.
05Where do donated, sold and discarded things end up?Ask whether removal of those things is in the price.
06If items are sold, how is the money handled?Ask for a record of what sold and for how much.
07Can you work around family who want to keep certain things?Useful when a home is being cleared for someone else.
08Will the same person come each session?Being able to pick up where you left off saves time.
Ask each business the same questions and write the answers side by side. Printed, the sheet fills one page, with a column for each of three quotes. From declutteringservices.com.au, a concept page.

What changes the price

The size of the space and how much is in it set most quotes, but so does the pace you want to work at. Sorting together, item by item, takes longer than handing over a brief.

Ask whether taking things away, to a charity shop, a buyer or the tip, is part of the quote or a separate charge. It is the line most likely to differ between services.

Before the first session

Choose one room or one cupboard to start with, and decide what you want that space to be used for once it is clear. A clear goal for the space makes each choice quicker.

Put aside anything you already know you are keeping, such as papers and photographs, so it is not caught up in the sorting.

Where to check

  • ABN Lookup, Australian Business Register

Shows whether a business's ABN is active or cancelled, its business type and its GST status, and the Register says the public can use it to check a business before buying.
